«No» y «not» en inglés

No y not son dos adverbios negativos en inglés que se traducen como “no”.

Mientras que en español existe un único adverbio de negación, en inglés existen dos: no y not, que se utilizan en distintos contextos gramaticales. Ambos se traducen como “no”. Por ejemplo:

• I have not been to Asia. / No he estado en Asia.

Diferencias entre no y not en inglés

La diferencia entre no y not radica en la parte del discurso que se quiere negar:

No	Not
Se utiliza para negar sustantivos y frases sustantivas.	Se utiliza para negar verbos (auxiliares, verbos modales y verbos secundarios).
No person is allowed in the premises. No se permite el ingreso de ninguna persona al recinto.	They did not come. Ellos no vinieron.

Cuidado: A diferencia del español, en inglés no existe la doble negación, es decir, no se puede negar más de una parte del discurso a la vez. Por ejemplo: I have no idea. (no + sustantivo). Equivale a: I don’t have any idea. (not + auxiliar) Y no: I don’t have no idea.

¿Cuándo se usa no en inglés?

La palabra negativa no en inglés puede ser un adverbio o un determinante, según el contexto. Significa “no” y se utiliza para:

• Responder de manera negativa a una yes-no question. Se utiliza en contraposición a yes. Por ejemplo: Would you like some coffee? No, thank you. / ¿Quisieras café? No, gracias.
• Negar un sustantivo. No + sustantivo expresa la negación en el sustantivo y no en el verbo, que va en positivo. Por ejemplo: I have no money. / No tengo dinero.
• Expresar una prohibición en carteles y señales. Se utiliza no seguido de un gerundio. Por ejemplo: No smoking. / No fumar.

No también se utiliza para formar pronombres y adverbios negativos. Por ejemplo: nobody (nadie), no one (nadie), nowhere (en ningún lugar).

No también se puede traducir como “ninguno”. Por ejemplo: No student passed the exam. / Ningún estudiante aprobó el examen.

¿Cuándo se utiliza not en inglés?

La palabra negativa not en inglés es un adverbio que significa “no”. Se utiliza para:

• Negar los verbos. Se utiliza not junto al verbo to be y junto a los auxiliares de todos los tiempos verbales. Se niegan los auxiliares y no los verbos. Por ejemplo: I did not say that. / No dije eso. (Y no: I not said that.).
• Negar verbos con -ing o to infinitive. Se antepone not a un verbo secundario en -ing o to infinitive. Por ejemplo: We decided not to go. / Decidimos no ir.
• Negar pronombres. Por ejemplo: Ask the teacher, not me. / Pregúntale a la maestra, no a mí.
• Negar adverbios y determinantes. Por ejemplo: Not many people came to the party. / No mucha gente vino a la fiesta.
• Reemplazar un verbo negativo. Se utiliza para evitar repetir un verbo que está claro por contexto. Por ejemplo: I love all desserts, but not chocolate cake. / Me gustan todos los postres pero no el pastel de chocolate. (Equivale a: I love all desserts, but I do not like chocolate cake.)
• Expresar una respuesta de opinión negativa. Se utiliza con verbos como think, believe, hope. Por ejemplo: Do you think they will fail the exam? I hope not. / ¿Crees que reprobarán el examen? Espero que no.

Se suele contraer la palabra not (n’t) en la negación de auxiliares y verbos modales en inglés. En esos casos, la contracción va unida al auxiliar o verbo modal. Por ejemplo: don’t (do not), didn’t (did not ), hasn’t (has not), shouldn’t (should not).

• Non-. Es un prefijo negativo que se utiliza para formar adjetivos y sustantivos negativos. Por ejemplo: a non-aggression pact (un pacto de no agresión), non-stop (sin parar), a non-smoking area (un área de no fumadores).
• None. Es un pronombre que reemplaza a no + sustantivo. Por ejemplo: None came. / Ninguno vino. (Equivale a: No student came.)
• None of. Cuando none es seguido de un adjetivo demostrativo (these, those) o un artículo (a, the), se utiliza none of. Por ejemplo: None of the students came. / Ninguno de los estudiantes vino.
