Los números cardinales en inglés (one, two, three) son adjetivos numerales que se utilizan antes de un sustantivo para expresar cantidad. Por ejemplo: a year /un año, three days /tres días, five oranges /cinco naranjas.

Los números ordinales en inglés (first, second, third) son adjetivos numerales que se utilizan antes de un sustantivo para expresar orden. Por ejemplo: third grade /tercer grado, the fourth anniversary /el cuarto aniversario, the first one from the left /el primero de la izquierda.

Los números cardinales y ordinales siguen la regla de todo adjetivo en inglés, es decir no tienen ni género (masculino o femenino) ni número (singular o plural). Por ejemplo: one apple, ten houses, three teachers.

Los números cardinales y ordinales pueden ser pronombres (y no adjetivos) cuando se utilizan sin el sustantivo. Por ejemplo: He came in first. / I only have one. / There are just three.

¿Cuándo se usan los números cardinales en inglés?

Los números cardinales en inglés, al igual que en español, se usan para expresar:

  • Cantidades. Por ejemplo: There are three apples on the table.
  • Edades. Por ejemplo: His brother is five years old.
  • Números de teléfono: My phone number is 735-2536.
  • Fechas. Por ejemplo: 7 July.

¿Cuándo se usan los números ordinales en inglés?

Los números ordinales en inglés, al igual que en español, se usan para expresar:

  • La posición dentro de una sucesión. Por ejemplo, de una carrera (My group came in last in the competition), el piso de un edificio (I live on the third floor), un aniversario (It’s the company’s tenth anniversary)
  • Fechas. Por ejemplo: June 1st.

Algunas reglas sobre los números cardinales

  • A partir del número trece (thirteen) y hasta el diecinueve (nineteen). los cardinales tienen la misma terminación (-teen). Por ejemplo: sixteen, seventeen, eighteen.
  • Todos las decenas exactas a partir del veinte (twenty) terminan en -ty. Por ejemplo: thirty, forty, fifty.
  • A partir del número veintiuno (twenty-one), se usa un guión para separar la decena. Por ejemplo: twenty-three, forty-eight, seventy-four.
  • A partir del número cien, se utiliza la expresión one hundred o a hundred. Por ejemplo: one hundred ten / a hundred and ten.

Excepción: Algunos números cardinales derivados de otros números sufren transformaciones. Estos son: thirteen, fifteen, forty, fifty.

Algunas reglas sobre los números ordinales

  • Los números ordinales en inglés se abrevian utilizando las dos últimas letras del ordinal escrito. Por ejemplo: first / 1st, second / sixth / 6th, tenth / 10th.
  • A partir del fourth (cuarto), la terminación es th (fifth / 5th, sixth / 6th) con excepción de las terminaciones st, nd y rd, que se utilizan en los tres primeros números de todas las decenas a partir del veinte. Por ejemplo: twenty-first / 21st, twenty-second /nd, twenty- third / rd.

Atención: Algunos ordinales tienen cambios en la escritura con respecto al cardinal. Estos son: fifth, ninth, twelfth.

¿Cómo se dice el número cien en inglés?

El número cien en inglés se puede decir one hundred o a hundred.

¿Cómo se dice el número mil en inglés?

El número mil en inglés se dice one thousand o a thousand y en forma numérica se escribe 1,000.

¿Cómo se dicen los números a partir del mil en inglés?

Los números a partir del mil en inglés se forman anteponiendo las expresiones one (o a) thousand / million /  billion a la unidad. Por ejemplo: one thousand five hundred (mil quinientos), three million three hundred thousand (tres millones trescientos mil).

  • Atención: Los números a partir del mil se escriben de forma numérica utilizando la coma y no el punto, como en español. Por ejemplo: 1,000 (one thousand), 2,500 (two thousand five hundred), 7,000 (seven thousand).
  • Atención: A diferencia del español, los números hundred (cien), million (millón), billion (billón) y trillion (trillón) van siempre en singular aún cuando se refieren a un sustantivo plural. Por ejemplo: three hundred people, four million dollars, two billion pesos.

¿Cómo se dice un millón y un billón en inglés?

Cuidado: los números un billón y un trillón en inglés tienen tres y seis ceros menos respectivamente comparados con el español.

¿Cómo se dice el número 0 (cero) en inglés?

El número 0 (zero) en inglés se expresa de manera diferente dependiendo del contexto.

Zero se utiliza para expresar:

  • El número cardinal en matemáticas. Por ejemplo: Zero comes before one. / El cero viene antes que el uno.
  • Cuentas matemáticas: One plus zero equals one. / Uno más cero equivale a cero.
  • Números telefónicos, en inglés americano. Por ejemplo: The telephone number is 703-4534 (seven – zero – three… ).
  • Temperaturas (bajo o sobre cero). Por ejemplo: It’s 5 degrees below zero.

Oh, que se pronuncia igual a la letra o, se utiliza para expresar:

  • El cero en la denominación de los años. Por ejemplo: 1907 / nineteen oh seven.
  • Los primeros diez minutos de la hora, con excepción de “y cinco” e “y diez”. Por ejemplo: It’s 10.04 (ten oh four)
  • Números telefónicos, principalmente en inglés británico: Por ejemplo: My telephone number is 804-5467 (eight – oh – four…).
  • El número de las habitaciones de un hotel. Por ejemplo: Your room number is 103 (one oh three).

Atención: Hay contextos específicos donde el número 0 (cero) cambia de nombre. En tenis, por ejemplo, se lo denomina love. Por ejemplo: Love – fifteen / Cero – quince.

¿Cómo se utiliza el cero en los números decimales?

Para expresar el cero como unidad antes de un decimal, se pueden utilizar las palabras zero, oh, point y nought (esta última en inglés británico). Por ejemplo: 0.7 (zero point seven / point seven).

Para expresar el cero como decimal se pueden utilizar las palabras zero, oh y nought (inglés británico). Por ejemplo: 7.02 (seven point zero two / seven point oh two / seven point nought two).
