Preposiciones de tiempo «in», «on», «at»

Las preposiciones in, on y at introducen complementos circunstanciales de tiempo, que sirven para expresar cuándo se realiza una acción. Por ejemplo:

  • I like to have coffee in the morning. / Me gusta tomar café a la mañana.
  • Olivia has English classes on Mondays. / Olivia tiene clases de inglés los lunes.
  • I’ll be back at six. / Volveré a las seis.

Aunque existen muchos usos de las preposiciones de tiempo in, on y at, se puede decir que se utilizan para:

  • in: meses, años, siglos y períodos largos
  • on: días de la semana y fechas
  • at: horas y tiempos exactos

En otros contextos, las preposiciones in, on y at introducen complementos circunstanciales de lugar. Por ejemplo: I live in Mexico. / Vivo en México.

La preposición de tiempo on se utiliza para expresar:

Atención:

  • En inglés oral se suele omitir la preposición on cuando se refiere a un día de la semana en contextos informales. Por ejemplo: See you (on) Friday! / ¡Nos vemos el viernes!
  • On vacation (de vacaciones) es una expresión en inglés americano.

Para tener en cuenta: No se utiliza in, on y at antes de:

  • this. Por ejemplo: I haven’t seen Peter this morning. (Y no: in this morning)
  • next. Por ejemplo: Mary will be in Colombia next Saturday. (Y no: on next Saturday)
  • last. Por ejemplo: My great-grandparents lived in Belgium last century. (Y no: in last century)
  • every. Por ejemplo: I do yoga every Friday. (Y no: on every Friday)

  2. We always have tea together in the afternoon.
